Dr. Deadman  is Chair of the Section on the History and Philosophy of Psychiatry at the Canadian Psychiatric Association.
Dr. Chaimowitz is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences at McMaster University in Hamilton

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the close connection between psychiatry and the law throughout history
  2. Appreciate the incompatible goals of psychiatric practice: (a) amelioration of human suffering; (b) control of social deviance
  3. Understand how the rapid changes to forensic programs in the 1970s and ’80s contributed to some colossal screw-ups
